InRoute Pro + Allstays: route and EV charger planning tips for towing
Route and charger planning. We all have our techniques, but I thought I’d share what is working really well for me. We tow with a Rivian R1T and are constantly covering new ground on this trans-Canada trip.
InRoute Pro - I’ve used this app for many years. Tried others, but this one does more for me. Many routing preference options (elevation, temperature, curviness…) and the ability to easily pin objectives (EV chargers, campgrounds……) at either x hours or x miles along route and most usefully, at x hours or x miles on route ahead of selected pin. For chargers, the map imagery is good enough to zoom in to evaluate trailer access. For campgrounds, similar map imagery and good information with links to their websites.
In Canada, InRoute is finding chargers that the Rivian and Plugshare are missing.
I also use ALLSTAYS Camp & RV to check campground info. and user reviews, but have found that user reviews are scarce in Canada - the app apparently isn’t used so much here. Same for Campendium, Harvest Hosts and others. Allstays does include Harvest Host as well as overnight parking locations. We’ll try our first Harvest Host in Moose Jaw, SK.
I then feed the day’s objectives into the Rivian nav system for validation and real time navigation. I could use inRoute in real time, but the Rivian is very good for this.
Confession- this AI resistant old engineer has begun using the new ‘Hey Rivian’ for such as ‘Find me a Supercharger with a good Indian restaurant near’.
