It’s not just Ionna; it’s Tesla V4 and whatever the Mercedes-Benz new high-voltage chargers are. They charge for 5 seconds and then the light goes red with “unable to charge.” This is showing up on 2023 models right now, so it is likely software that may have been cleaned up for a 2024 Silverado or later. Unclear. We don’t have enough clues yet.
For Tesla, Version 2s with a short charger and short cable will never work and should be filtered out of your charging suggestions if your navigation settings are set correctly for your non-Tesla vehicle. Their architecture does not play well with any CCS architecture.
Version 3+ with Magic Dock will be marked in navigation apps as available to all; those should work with Pebble.
Version 3+ without Magic Dock works with vehicle brands that Tesla grants permission to access the Supercharger Network. We have been told Pebble is working on getting Supercharger access, but the status is not available.
I am not well versed in Supercharger versions. From Vancouver, BC to Blind River, ON, Superchargers have been plug and charge for my Rivian. Absolutely great, even several with signs “Tesla Only.” Then came three Supercharger banks in three consecutive towns that did not accept the Rivian. Sudbury, ON was our first real challenge; we wound up at a GM dealership on a Sunday to use their 50 kW Flo charger. Fortunately, in North Bay, ON, Tesla played nice again.
Wait, I read your post again: 2023 models can't charge? My Silverado has never had a problem.
Do you use the Tesla app to find the charger or another app? If you use the Tesla app, it will not show you locations that do not charge non-Teslas, such as the older-version chargers.
Hardware is the key, except Tesla. The Mercedes-Benz charger that didn't work for my Pebble was an Alpitronic 400 charger. It was branded Mercedes-Benz. Alpitronic chargers have a “look,” are easy to spot, and should have a label on them too.
IONNA uses Alpitronic 400s pretty exclusively, so they have the same incompatibility issue. I also had an Alpitronic 400 not work at an EVgo. Lots of charge point operators are using Alpitronic 400 chargers, and they are usually great, fast, easy to use, and reliable—as long as you are not a Pebble. It's a charger hardware or software compatibility issue with Alpitronic, not with the company running the site. This is my untrained opinion and based on anecdotal evidence. I have also had problems with a Delta charger branded EVgo that didn't work with Pebble.
It's not the big sign for the charging-station brand; it's the little label on the charger telling you who manufactured it that you have to look at to know compatibility. They are still “working” on these issues, so we are told.
