What space-saving water purifier alternatives to RO work well?

If RO is wasteful, has anybody found a better under-sink water-purifier solution? I may just use my Berkey, but it takes up space.

We plan to drink water from a jug of filtered water, either from home or the store. We are not going to drink water from the tank. We'll use it for cooking and washing only.
